Not Enough Time for Love Essay -- Literary Analysis, Shakespeare

The Tragedy of Romeo and Juliet written by William Shakespeare is a tragic story of two â€Å"star-crossed lovers† (prologue) fighting against time and their families for their love. This story is a prime example of what young couples should not do which is, fall in love to fast. Romeo and Juliet knew each other for less than a week when they fell in love and got married. Shakespeare used many instances of time and haste during this story. â€Å"The opening scene of the play establishes the pace at which tragic fate will unfold.† (Driver, 488). Romeo, who had just gotten dumped by Rosaline, was devastated. Then he met Juliet at a party and â€Å"No sooner does Romeo see Juliet than he falls in love with her.† (Shavi, 511). Later that evening Romeo met Juliet and she says she is in love with Romeo even though they know their families hate each other. â€Å" Their love is instant and mutual and before dawn they are betrothed.† (Shavi, 510). Three instan ces of time in haste in The Tragedy of Romeo and Juliet are: how quickly Romeo and Juliet fall in love, how quickly the pair married, and how quickly they die for each other. â€Å"Like all young people, Romeo and Juliet are uncertain and hasty in their first encounters with the problems of reality.† (Ribner, 474). Romeo and Juliet might have been in love, but they never had a chance to fully love one another, because they were together for only a short period of time. The only people that know about their love were the Nurse and Friar Lawrence. The nurse, who sided with Romeo and Juliet being together in the beginning, quickly changed her mind and told Juliet that she go ... ... each other. Second they know they would have tried to break the two up, which would have made them want to kill themselves, because they two constantly talked about dying for their love. Lastly the hatred between both families would have driven them apart because they would have gotten forbidden to see each other. As soon as the families found out about them, they realized there fighting was stupid and caused the death of their children. To sum up the whole story Romeo and Juliet’s love never had a chance because time was not on their side and neither were the two families. The young couple thought that everything would be solved if they hurried up and got married and that is what they did and it ended in disaster. This story, by William Shakespeare, is a perfect example of how falling in love quickly can be good in some instances and bad in others.

A Whole New Mind

Pink has presented sharp scientific evidence in his book A Whole New Mind that comes as common knowledge to the majority of us in our society. He also stressed the several capabilities of right-brain thinking such as creativity, artistry, empathy, inventiveness, and overall big picture viewpoints. I noticed that Pink failed to mention any historical aspects before the 1900’s. For example; during the European Renaissance numerous right-brain thinking characters sprouted with many ideas for the world. These characters include painters, sculptors, inventors, musicians, and writers all across Europe. We all know, however, that the European Renaissance came and went. What will this new Conceptual Age produce differently than the faded right-dominance of the European Renaissance years? Looking back in time between the years of 1400-1550 the geniuses of this world contributed to the life we live in now. I only say this because if they weren’t important to our society today than we wouldn’t have had to learn about them during our high school years or even our college years. A brilliant inventor, painter, musician, and mathemation Leonardo da Vinci is one man who seems to have a great grasp of life in all his talents. He along with many other philosophers of that era seemed to fit the description of what I feel Pink suggests we should obtain throughout our lives to be successful and to lead our life in a way to help not only our generation but for the generations after ours as well. As we have studied in countless texts in high school about the several factors for the downfall of the European Renaissance and the complications after that time we should feel troubled to once again attempt to shift our minds. Right-brain thinking is an aged solution. Pink’s proposal is one we have already gone through but is introduced in a business-like manner unlike the European Renaissance. How are we supposed to know that the Conceptual Age will not increase the desire to create machines that will replace the art industry, so that beauty can be drawn in an instant? I think that Pink’s transition solution from the Information Age to the Conceptual Age should be revised to explain more of what he has missed in his book that had me puzzled.

The Battle of Amiens occurred during World War I (1914-1918). The British offensive began on August 8, 1918, and the first phase effectively ended on August 11. The first of these was launched in late July when French Marshal Ferdinand Foch opened the Second Battle of the Marne. As the fighting at the Marne waned around August 6, British troops were preparing for a second assault near Amiens. Originally conceived by the commander of the British Expeditionary Force, Field Marshal Sir Douglas Haig, the attack was intended to open rail lines near the city. Seeing an opportunity to continue the success achieved at the Marne, Foch insisted that the French First Army, just to the south of the BEF, be included in the plan. The First Army would take part in the assault, however, its advance would commence forty-five minutes after the British. This would allow the Fourth Army to achieve surprise but still permit the French to shell German positions before attacking. Prior to the attack, the Fourth Armys front consisted of the British III Corps (Lt. Gen. Richard Butler) north of the Somme, with the Australian (Lt. Gen. Sir John Monash) and Canadian Corps (Lt. Gen. Sir Arthur Currie) to the south of the river. In the days prior the attack, extreme efforts were made to ensure secrecy. These included dispatching two battalions and a radio unit from the Canadian Corps to Ypres in an effort to convince the Germans that the entire corps was being shifted to that area. In addition, British confidence in the tactics to be used was high as they had been successfully tested in several localized assaults. At 4:20 AM on August 8, British artillery opened fire on specific German targets and also provided a creeping barrage in front of the advance. Moving Forward As the British began moving forward, the French commenced their preliminary bombardment. Striking General Georg von der Marwitzs Second Army, the British achieved complete surprise. South of the Somme, the Australians and Canadians were supported by eight battalions of the Royal Tank Corps and captured their first objectives by 7:10 AM. To the north, the III Corps occupied their first objective at 7:30 AM after advancing 4,000 yards. Opening a gaping fifteen-mile long hole in the German lines, British forces were able to keep the enemy from rallying and pressed the advance. By 11:00 AM, the Australians and Canadians had moved forward three miles. With the enemy falling back, British cavalry moved forward to exploit the breach. The advance north of the river was slower as the III Corps was supported by fewer tanks and encountered heavy resistance along a wooded ridge near Chipilly. The French also had success and moved forward approximately five miles before nightfall. On average, the Allied advance on August 8 was seven miles, with the Canadians penetrating eight. Over the next two days, the Allied advance continued, though at a slower rate. Aftermath By August 11, the Germans had returned to their original, pre-Spring Offensives lines. Dubbed the Blackest Day of the German Army by Generalquartiermeister Erich Ludendorff, August 8 saw a return to mobile warfare as well as the first large surrenders of German troops. By the conclusion of the first phase on August 11, Allied losses numbered 22,200 killed wounded and missing. German losses were an astounding 74,000 killed, wounded, and captured. Seeking to continue the advance, Haig launched a second assault on August 21, with the goal of taking Bapaume.
